William R. Miller, CBE
To Our Friends of the Garden,
It is with great regret that we inform you of the passing of our beloved friend William R. Miller, CBE Chairman Emeritus of the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden.
Bill was a driving force behind the Garden from inception to opening in 2010 by HM Queen Elizabeth II & HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh when Bill was able to introduce Her Majesty & His Royal Highness to all our supporters and show them the Memorial that we had built to remember the lives lost that fateful day.
Bill was Chair of the Garden Board for many years and was a lead donor and we presented him with the Winston Churchill Award for his distinguished service at our last Gala in 2019.
Among his many philanthropic interests, he was a Past President of St. George’s Society of New York and Chairman of Americans for Oxford. He led many other charitable causes over the years including initiatives for Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, his beloved Oxford University, The Manhattan School of Music, St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue and the Metropolitan Opera.
Outside of his philanthropic endeavors, Bill achieved a distinguished business career in the pharmaceutical industry and was Vice Chairman of Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Bill was a great friend to the Garden and to all of us. He will be greatly missed.
